The Ocoee River – A Legendary History
The Ocoee River, flowing through the Cherokee National Forest, has a rich history shaped by nature, innovation, and adventure. Originating as the Toccoa River in the mountains of northeast Georgia, its pure mountain waters carve through rugged terrain before crossing into Tennessee — where it becomes the legendary Ocoee River.
In 1911, President Theodore Roosevelt authorized the protection of this region’s pristine watersheds, establishing the Cherokee National Forest to safeguard its beauty and natural flow.
The Ocoee River was later harnessed for hydroelectric power by the East Tennessee Power Company, which constructed three major dams — now operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). These dams not only provide clean energy but also create the perfect conditions for controlled whitewater rafting, ensuring reliable water flow for adventure seekers year-round.
When the wooden flume of Dam No. 2 was shut down in 1976 for reconstruction, the Ocoee River ran freely once again — and thrill-seekers took notice. Early adventurers arrived with army surplus rafts, eager to conquer the rapids.
After much effort and negotiation with TVA, commercial rafting was officially allowed in 1977. That same year, Cherokee Rafting founders John and Judy Thomason saw an opportunity to share their love for the river — and Cherokee Rafting was born in 1978.
From Humble Beginnings to Olympic Waters
The Ocoee River quickly became a hub for whitewater racing and adventure tourism. In 1996, it gained international fame as the site of the Summer Olympic Slalom Canoe/Kayak Competition, drawing thousands of spectators and cementing the Ocoee’s reputation as a world-class whitewater destination.
Today, the Ocoee hosts over 230,000 rafters annually, making it America’s #1 whitewater rafting river. Cherokee Rafting continues to be part of that proud tradition — sharing Tennessee’s most thrilling outdoor experience with families, groups, and adventurers from around the world.
